General information about vanadia

This is a grayish silver metal whose crystal structure is a body-centered cubic (BCC) lattice with a melting point of 1926 °C. mined in an open way. Mainly used as alloying additions to high-strength low-alloy steels and, to a lesser extent, tool steels, cast iron and steel castings. It is also an important amplifier for titanium alloys.

Extraction of vanadium

For minerals rich in vanadium include will patronite (VS₄), carnotite [K₂ (UO₂) ₂ (VO₄) ₂] and vanadinite [Pb₅ (VO₄)₃ Cl]. Ore deposits of vanadium are rare because much of the vanadium in igneous rocks occurs in the relatively insoluble trivalent state, substituting for ferric iron in silicates ferromagnet, magnetite (iron ore), ilmenite (a titanium ore), and chromite. The extraction is carried out in an open way.

Ore processing

Titanium-containing magnetite ore is partially reduced with coal in rotary kilns and then melted in a furnace. After removal of the slag formed 12−24% pentoxide (V₂ O₅), which is used in the further processing of the metal. Vanadium is also extracted from carnotite in the form of a combination product with uranium by leaching the ore concentrate. After removal of the particulate vanadium is extracted into the organic phase, where it is distilled a 10% solution of soda ash and precipitated with ammonium sulfate. The precipitate of ammonium metavanadate is filtered, dried and calcine to V₂ O₅.
